Q-FACTOR INSTALLED IN SINGAPORE¡¯S ZOO
The Singapore Zoological Gardens, located in the Mandai Lake area of Singapore, recently installed a Q-factor Metrix Line Array System in the zoo’s Shaw Foundation Amphitheatre. The newly renovated 1,400 seat Amphitheatre is home to a variety of animal presentations and information shows.
Since its opening on June 27, 1973, the Singapore Zoo has become a home for over 315 different animals, and hosts up to 1.4 million visitors per year. The Zoo, which is set in an open-concept, rainforest environment, encompasses approximately 28 hectares of land that is designed to simulate the natural habitats of the animals in which it houses.
During the renovation of the open-air Shaw Amphitheatre, many additions were made including the construction of a new impressive fabric membrane roof, further rows of seating at the top, and a wide corridor for additional standing room. Purchasing criteria for the new sound system was primarily based on budget, coverage, requisite SPL and a fresh contemporary look.
The winning sound system design was executed by Team 108’s Kevin Nair and Mark Tan, who prepared all cabling and special rigging for the install. Mr Nair’s design features a L and R flown hang, each consisting of two Q-factor Metrix Subs at the top of the arrays, two 5 degree Metrix enclosures and four 15 degree Metrix W’s at the bottom, to complement and provide even coverage for the amphitheatre’s typically inclined seating. The audience area now possesses perfect sound with only one problem spot on stage, where there is a slight slap-back from the seating area’s concrete step construction; fortunately the reflection is virtually eliminated when the audience is present. The Q-factor system, which is accompanied by Lab.gruppen PLM 10000Q amplifiers, was installed right above the stage line, rather than on the ground to help minimize a negative response from the easily scared animals in the shows.
After the installation process, it became apparent that Q-factor was the right choice. The system exceeded the requirements and expectations for power and presence that their previous surround system had lacked. End of August, the Shaw Foundation Amphitheatre along with its new Q-factor setup, will debut the new animal information show titled ‘The Rainforest Fights Back’.
